News - Sam Rockwell in One-man Three-man Show, Moon
Written by Casey Owen 14 Jan 10

Moon is the feature-length directorial debut of Duncan Zowie Heywood Jones, son of Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie. The film was one of 2009's most critically acclaimed movies, making appearances in many top-ten lists - and with good cause too. Moon stars the excellent Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Choke) as Sam Bell, an astronaut stationed for a three-year stint on the moon in the not-too-distant future. His employer? Lunar Industries. His job? Harvesting and shipping back to Earth supplies of the fuel, helium-3. His only company? GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), a robot designed to assist Sam in his day-to-day affairs... Well, it isn't too long before Sam comes face to face with the last person he expected to see: himself.

Although frequently drawing comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey with the critics, it's probably only from an aesthetic standpoint. Moon is a true original in terms of story. Rockwell is in every scene and is amazing as past, future and present Sam. You get the feeling very few actors could have pulled this off. He has been routinely impressive and charismatic in his roles lately, but with Moon he's truly outdone himself. There's even a bit of Oscar buzz flying about for his performance. We'll have to wait for the nominations on that one. Academy Awards for acting aren't traditionally handed out to the sci-fi set. Sorry Shatner, Hammill.

Moon is one of the more impressive directorial feature debuts you will ever see. It's a true credit to writer-director Duncan Jones, who's only previous effort behind the camera is 2002 sci-fi short Whistle. His next film, to be released in 2011, is yet another sci-fi affair Source Code. Jake Gyllenhaal has been named lead, and he'll probably be trying to reclaim the indie sci-fi glory of the movie that put him on the map, Donnie Darko. The next time we'll see Rockwell on the big screen is in the highly anticipated (and unbelievably star-studded) Iron Man 2, which is in post-production.

Moon is set for DVD and Blu-ray release on February 24th. It's to be distributed nationally by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and will doubtless contain a swag of extra goodies!
